1:57 pm - I Figured it Out
I finally figured out what bugs me about Sarah Palin.

Not that she's a Republican. Heck, I'm a registered Republican.

Not that she's a socially conservative Christian. I don't vote based on that.

Not that she's a reasonably good-looking female. Heck, I've had bosses that fit that category with no problems.

The reason takes all those categories and then requires a comparison:

Sarah Palin is a reasonably good-looking woman who is a Christian conservative Republican.

My mother is a reasonably good-looking woman who is a Christian conservative Republican. And a flake of epic proportions that I wouldn't put in charge of a lemonade stand in July.

...

Obama '08.

12:35 pm - Facts Revealed! Going Green is Un-American!
Son, I was reading CNN.com today when I came across this seemingly innocuous article about the Chevy Volt:

NASCAR, meet the electric Chevy Volt

Nothing serious, mind you. Just a bit piece about the possibility of using electric cars for racing events, as well as marketing electric cars to "red states." Part of that draw was to show how reducing our dependence on foreign oil would make us a stronger nation. But then it goes on to the "drawbacks" of such a marketing campaign... [Bold emphasis mine.]

-----

Still, don't look for Chevrolet to necessarily trot out the American flag in the marketing plan.

"There is a fear that if we position this as a 'pro-American' car, it will upset some of the environmentally conscious crowd," explained Pete Lewis, who works in program operations at GM. "And we want it to be embraced by everyone."

-----

So, let me get this straight: this guy thinks that the people who embrace "going green" would be turned off by something smacking of patriotism? Makes me think GM is of the opinion that the eco-friendly crowd are, at least in some part, anti-American. Enough of a part that bringing up how electric cars would help the country would actually hurt their sales.

I can see it now. "I know that driving a Chevy Volt would reduce carbon emissions and help us 'save the planet.' But if it helps my country out of a jam then no, thanks. I'll keep destroying the environment, thankyouverymuch." Do they really believe this?

Heck, do they have a reason to believe it? Hmmm... Maybe the eco-friendly people do hate America! We have to act now! Anyone found driving a Hybrid should be found guilty of treason and shot!

Glad I didn't buy the Prius I looked at a couple years back. *whew*

11:53 am - Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss
So, for all those thinking that a vote for Obama will bring about an end to the invasive policies created post 9/11, that we will see a reduction of our government's attempts to curtail our rights to free speech, privacy and fair use, I present the counter-argument: Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Joe Biden:

Joe Biden's pro-RIAA, pro-FBI tech voting record

The article starts out with Biden's record supporting the extreme positions held by RIAA and MPAA, which is the lightest stuff on the record. The legislation he creates, proposes and supports, even as early as '95, in regards to intrusion of privacy, banning of encryption, allowance of military handling of criminal adjudication, restrictions on free speech, etc. is astounding. And this is the man selected to stand next to the great Bringer of Change?

And here I thought Hillary would be the worst VP candidate option for Barack...

11:19 am - Some General and Mildly Pointless Updates
Plans to use tax money to upgrade furniture and TV have been scrubbed due to stuff being a bit pricier then I'm willing to deal with right now. So we've gone to paying down current furniture and doing several small purchases of things we need as well.

Now I just have to finalize which purchases those will be.

-----

I started playing online poker on one of the sites rivalkeeper uses. It's kinda neat and mildly addictive. I'm keeping to the penny-ante tables for now. I put down the minimum deposit I could. And that's all I intend to ever put in it. Hopefully it'll last me a good long while.

And heck, I actually stepped away from my last two tables with more money then I brought. So maybe it will eventually become a money-maker... Okay, maybe not...

-----

Thanks to circumstances I'd have preferred avoiding, I'm now an "officer" in my WoW guild. I use the term "officer" lightly, since the junior officers in TAG [which are ironically named "Generals"] have very little empowerment but a good chunk of responsibility. The post has "middle management" written all over it. :)

Otherwise, things are the usual "pleasantly uneventful."

12:11 am - I Love My Mother, But...
...sometimes Mom doesn't come off as the sharpest tool in the shed.

We're at dinner. Mom, her husband [Leonard], his brother and wife, me and Marie. Leonard's brother is talking about his son-in-law, who is a habitual liar. Mom's response?

"He's just like my ex-husband. He would..."

Fortunately, Leonard had the good sense to remember the relationship between her ex-husband and her present and attentive son. His attempt to quickly and cleanly cut her off was impressive.

I let it go. No sense making things rough for the weekend. But I did feel like asking: "You're the one who preaches the Christian notion of 'forgive and forget.' Is there a part I missed about a 30 year moratorium before forgetting?"

No additional information as of yet. However, posted as a "Devloping Story" on CNN: "An aide tells The Associated Press that science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke has died at the age of 90."

I'm certain that he will dream.

Gary Gygax died. I'll avoid the obvious "save vs death" remark.

I guess Dave Arneson wins.

So, when you see the title for a CNN article is, "'Rambo 4' viewers face 10 years, 20 lashes" don't you think you yourself, "wasn't watching the movie punishment enough?"

4:36 pm - Old
Okay, it's bad enough to your psyche to hear songs from your childhood on Classic Rock or Oldies stations. Even more so when you hear songs from when you were in high school.

Now I'm hearing songs that were popular after I became an adult. Christ, I feel old.

Gives a whole new meaning to that "La Lei La Lu" thing Kermit does at the end of the song, doesn't it?

10:50 am - It's Election Time! Politicians, Put Away That last Scruple!
An editorialist for CNN, Roland S. Martin, wrote a piece on the voter BS in Nevada. But he pointed out the general feelings I've had for a long time: no one wants a free and fair election in this country. Just one that looks like one that gives them the win.

Commentary: Voters win as Nevada teachers union loses suit

I have a number of Democratic-Leaning friends, many of which foolishly stand upon this notion that their party is not the one trying to screw over the American people. And I know there are some GOP sympathizers that are blind to the stupidity of our own party. The reality is: both parties have no concern over your needs beyond your vote. And if your vote will be detrimental to them they will do anything in their power to make you not vote. All the while saying that every vote should count.

Or, as Mr Martin put it:

" Americans love to criticize elections in other nations that we don't think are done aboveboard. We tell Pakistan that there should be fair and free elections, and we denounce Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe for his strong-armed tactics to keep the opposition party away from the polls.

Is my comparison too harsh? No. They do it with guns. We do it with lawyers."

1:38 am - Happy WoW Holidays
So, Xorscha's gift from Greatfather Winter this year was the pattern for the Red Holiday Outfit. Oddly enough, even though it shows as grey, I managed to skill up 4 times with 5 outfits. And now I have my phots for my WoW toon Christmas cards. [Well, Alliance side at least.] *snap*Collapse )

EDIT: The pattern was grey, not green.

9:10 am - Yet Another Truck Loading Day
Thanks to my mother-in-law being a complete insane flake, Marie and I are stuck doing yet another "move" in order to salvage what we can of her stuff before her house is retaken by the landlord. "Mom" has already fled to Illinois, abandoning everything she owned. Including family heirlooms and the ashes of her late husband.

In any case, I must, once again, put out the request for moving assistance. We will be in Tamarac on Saturday, 17.November to pick up the truck and start the loading process. Anyone down south who would be willing to help would be appreciated. The usual fee of food and drink will be offered, as well as dibs on anything left in the house that we are not trying to take with us. [Don't expect much useful. But if you see something you want, goferit.]

As of right now [and I say "right now" because my wife keeps changing her plans on me] we intend to start the unloading process the following Sunday in Port St. Lucie. We hope to have a couple people to help us up there. But if you ever felt like coming to visit the new Chez Frank that would be a wonderful day to do it. Food and drink will still be available. But no, you can't take stuff from this house for your own. [No, my computer is not being abandoned. So don't get any ideas. :P ]

If you would like to come to either end of this new moving run, call me on my cell for locations and directions. If you don't have my number, respond here and I'll find a way to contact you directly.

To those who come, thanks in advance. :)
