3:12 pm - The EVE Renaissance Continues
For the past month my gaming life has focused on EVE Online. Thanks to a change of corps I have found that there are things to do there again. Fun things.

Mean things.

The corp I'm in has all sorts of plans for the future of the corp and the region we're in. I have found a calling in one of the early steps of this plan, where we disrupt mining operations in the region that we do not have a say in. Part of that disruption comes from a practice hated by many lazy miners known as, "can-flipping." Can-Flipping Defined, along with various ramifications for this practice.Collapse )

I've found the art of finding marks to flip, assessing the risks and making the hit to be something I do relatively well. I've even begun planning and running small groups of can flippers to hit larger mining operations. It's managed to supplant what little desire to do things, like raiding in WoW, I had left in me.

Other then that, life is the usual. Broke but making things work. No new pet worries. Things are pleasantly uneventful.

5:34 pm - Up and Running...
...but with a minor quirk.

So far it appears the only damaged component on my compy was the motherboard. [Although the PS may have been fried as well. Have to test the old one. I had already replaced it, thinking it was the problem.] It was nice. Didn't even have to reinstall XP.

However...

When a mobo is listed as having 5 SATA ports, and you look at the pic and see two of them are a different color, it would be best to ask why they are that color. Apparently, due to a "chipset limitation" the last two SATA ports do not support IDE mode. So, having four SATA devices at the moment is not happening. Not a huge deal, even if I have to go down to three drives. Just means I have some wiggling around to do with data and drive images.

In any case, back to hires gaming land. :)

9:56 am - Doggie Update
Raiden's tests came back today with no signs of heartworm. Not even trace amounts. He's officially out of the woods and onto prevention. Things are looking up.

Now to just get paid and start getting the computer as healthy as the dog. :P

3:36 pm - $%^*$%^*$ Computer
Well, it's been a year or two. Guess it's time to deal with yet another fried computer.

My compy is dead. Won't even start. This is, most likely, due to the t-storm we we had Sunday that knocked our power out after a large bang. All my other computer hardware is fine. Just my computer that won't start.

So, after eliminating a number of other potential issues I was left with either the power supply being bad or the mobo. [Or, I guess, the CPU could be a problem too.] So, I decided I'd be optimistic and get a new PS.

Guess what? That didn't fix the problem. *sigh*

Oddly enough, I'm not as morbidly depressed as I would normally be inthis situation. I'm going to get another box from work to cover that situation. I don't play WoW. I've been taking a break from EvE. I have no real committment to LOTRO. [Although I do miss playing it a bit.] And this gave me an excuse to set the Mac up for a little bit, letting me see about pulling my pics that I don't have anywhere else off of it.

But, of course, this couldn't have happened at a worse time, financially. I've had to pay for vet and dentist bills recently. I'm left wondering how I'm going to pay for both the mortgage and have food. So I'm probably going to have to do without my main system until late August.

I need another hobby. :P

6:49 pm - This Just In: Frank Goes to a Doctor! [And Raiden is Already at One.]
Yeah, I know, it's a strange day. I actually chose to go. Well, sortaCollapse )

The one good thing out of all of this is it takes a little piece of my mind off of poor Raiden, who is at the vet getting his second round of heartworm treatment. We've had to go in both afternoons while he's at the vet to feed him. He's been refusing to eat for the staff there. But he's gone through both injections and seems to be doing okay. We should be able to bring him home tomorrow morning.

Oh, and I started playing LOTRO again. Maybe I'll stick with it a while now that I don't have the WoW distraction anymore. But I'm not making any bets.

1:13 pm - Dog and EvE Updates
So, a month into owning a dog we go to the vet for a problem with his foot.

We come out with the revelation that he has a severe case of heartworms.

Turns out my old boy is in pretty bad straits. On the 1-4 scale [4 being worst case] the vet categorized him in the 3-4 range. In combination with his age she would, at best, give him a 50-50 chance of making it through the treatment. Things were not looking good for him.

Although he's not out of the woods yet, so far my dog has been doing pretty well. He made it through the first treatment so far. He was rather weak for a while, refusing to eat and with a pretty rough cough. But he has since picked up a stable appetite, the coughing is very rare and he is more lively then when we first got him. [He's still rather docile. But at least he gets around more often then when we needs to go out.] The vet has been conservative about doing his second treatment, constantly putting it off to make sure he's okay for it. I just hope it doesn't become a situation where the first treatment has to be redone.

-----

As for EvE Online: I'm now in with a corp that does a significant amount of PvP action. Fleet Wars, POS assaults, anti-piracy stuff. Definitely finding it more interesting then WoW was becoming for me. PvP in EvE is a lot of cat & mouse. Trying to find and hit the enemy at your strength instead of his. Throw in the significant risk of in-game resources when you get popped [as well as the strategy involved in mitigating that loss while still fielding an effective ship] and it makes combat in EvE quite challenging.

All I need to do now is figure out how to stop fiddling with the skill training and ship fitting tools when I'm supposed to be working. :P

6:31 pm - WoW, and Other Stuff
For those here that are in my WoW Guild: don't be shocked if I get the boot [or a demotion] sometime soon. I'm going against the establishment. [Well, I'm vehemently disagreeing with Arg in a way that upsets him.] If it happens I may just quit WoW entirely. At least for a while. If being in an uber raiding guild means shitting on people you've played with for months just to expedite the future killing of digital monsters then I guess I'll become a casual again.

Not that I've really been able to play since the accident. Anything longer then 20-30 minutes and I need to log out before either my head explodes or I throw up.

Speaking of vehicular crap:

I can't buy another vehicle. My credit is not very good, even though I consistently pay my mortgage and car loan. New car loans seem to be right out. Anything used either has a lower down payment and horribly high interest, creating payments I can't make, or has an interest rate that, while high, is not incredibly out of whack but requires an obscene amount down.

So, once again, I'm forced to rely on the good graces of my family. While I appreciate their generosity it kills me to have to take it. Out of nine vehicles I have owned [or been the primary driver] only two have not been gifts from family members. And now I'm in that position again. It's better then being on foot. But it deflates the pride and self-worth.

Oddly enough, the new vehicle is a black Mazda pickup. Almost exactly like my old one. It's like I've gone back in time two years. Well, at least there are no payments. Which means I can save up for a year or so and look again at new vehicles.

8:40 am - PSL Crime Spree Hits Chez Frank
Someone stole my garbage can.

I know it was stolen. How? They were nice enough to leave the garbage in it. Made a neat pile right where the can used to be.

The most screwed up thing is, assuming I can even find that can again in a store [and at the cheap price it was when I got it at Wal Mart, and then never saw there again] I can't replace it until I get paid Friday.

I hate people. Fucking animals.

So, I got my escrow refund Tuesday. Considering the combination of increased homestead exemption and severely decreased market value, the refund was significant. At least there is a little silver lining on that huge black cloud of negative equity.

So, of course, I had to go blow it on frivolous stuff...Collapse )

As happy as I am that this election had a decisive ending [I'm even happy with the results], as happy as I am that it was decided before Florida was called, insuring that we could not be held to blame if any BS cropped up, I still find myself depressed that Amendment 2 passed.

Not completely surprised. I had a feeling it could happen. But that it wasn't actually all that close. As of my last look at the number [92% precincts in] all but two counties gave it a majority support.

Monroe and Alachua.

WTF?!?

[Not that I don't get those two counties rejecting it. But no Broward? That just blows my mind.]

5:06 pm - The Tarnished Silver Lining
Well, the good side to having the housing market tank and my property values go down the toilet: my taxes are almost $1,110 less then last year. That plus the drop in property insurance for me earlier in the year should mean a nice little escrow refund.

Yeah, I'm not exactly dancing in the street either.
